That’s a true experience shared by a participant in one of my recent ‘Take a Break & Get A Grip’ conference presentations.
He is way too young to slough the experience off as a ‘senior moment’. And, of course, a ‘one-of’ experience like this does not confirm early-onset Alzheimers. But…it could well be an indicator light on the dashboard of life suggesting it’s time to slow down, tune in, and focus on the task at hand.
ACTION:
The next time you start racing to and fro, speeding along with very little conscious direction or intent, jot this trio of questions on a brightly colored post-it note. Place it where you’ll be challenged to Press Pause & Think Again – and ultimately respond in more thoughtful, ‘present-to-the-moment’ ways.

In response to my most recent message, The Burden of Bundling, Pause reader JO writes: Your article reminded me of how systems thinking can help clarify when you are in overwhelm. Everything is related to some extent in a system. We as people are interdependent. Issues in groups or teams can show up in certain places but the root cause may be somewhere else. When things get jumbled in my mind, I use this as a signal to switch from a breakdown mode to a systems mode to see the broader and more holistic picture. Rather than overwhelm, this focus on the system dynamic helps me clarify.

REFLECTION:
No doubt you’ve been following the reports on the tragic earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan. Apparently, one of the most credible voices offering news updates in Japan is chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano.
Mr. Edano broadcasts reports on the latest developments an average of five times a day – at all hours of the day and night. His listening audience is growing concerned about his health. They’re noting his tussled hair, beads of sweat on his brow, tired eyes, and a growing weariness in his expression. They’re expressing their concerns via postings on Twitter encouraging Mr. Edano to step away and get some sleep.
ACTION:
Thankfully, few of us are facing challenges as severe as the nation of Japan. Still, we may find ourselves concerned about those nearer at hand who are dangerously overextending themselves for much lesser reasons – risking health and well-being in the process. It could be that we even see one of those people when we look in the mirror in the morning.
How about following the lead of the concerned Japanese? Take or make an opportunity to reach out in concern, encouraging time for renewal when none is being taken. Encouragement could take the form of wise counsel, an invitation to step briefly away for rest or refreshment, or an offer to lend a hand and lift the load.
Zest without rest is a short-term strategy with long-term consequences.

In response to last week’s message, Surviving Mini Marathon, Pause reader YD writes: Interesting epiphany this morning for me. I’m a trail runner – a long distance trail runner – that’s the sport I love. It’s my frustration burning strategy, my creative / self-connection / meditation / self-love time. Over the years, I’ve developed ways to take care of my body: proper eating, yoga, stretching, sleeping, massage, taper period, etc. I’ve developed many routines to get up the day after, ready to hit the trail again.
I’m also a ‘long distance’ runner at WORK. But I realize now I don’t really have effective ways to take care of me – ways to get up the next day ready to run again. And maybe, just maybe, I should cut down on the distance I ‘run’ at work.

REFLECTION:
This year, September and October were pretty active months in my life. It didn’t really hit me how active they had been until November rolled around and my schedule loosened up a bit. Quite the contrast!
S & O were filled with great things – no complaints there! Challenging work with interesting clients. An engaging conference on workplace wellness. A heartfelt farewell to a dear friend. A family wedding celebration. An exciting vacation get away. Mentoring and charity work. I wouldn’t have traded away any of those activities.
In retrospect, what I might have done differently is paid more attention to TAT – the Turn Around Time – between events. There’s a lot of performance pressure to reduce Turn Around Time in the world of work – faster responses to messages, quicker delivery of products, instant access to services. But there can be a personal cost to upping the ante.
When TAT shrinks, pressure grows. There is no longer time to savor what you’ve just experienced nor to fully anticipate what comes next. Minor glitches easily assume major proportions. The rhythm shifts to rush and roar – as we spend our days rushing in and roaring out.
Richard Swenson describes what’s missing in these situations as margin – those gaps in timing, the cushioning between engagements, a sense of openness to possibilities in our daily experience. Linda Popov describes what we might aspire to instead as a pace of grace.
ACTION:
If TAT is an issue for you, too, here are a handful of strategies to play with as you try to strike a more satisfying balance on Turn Around Time:
Build ‘mop up’ time into the scheduling of meetings and events. If a gathering ends at 4:00, it will probably be 4:30 before you’ve finished those last minute conversations, packed up, made a washroom stop, and disengaged enough to move on. Knowing that, don’t book your next engagement across town for 4:15.
To minimize overcommitment, make prep time visible on your calendar. If you’ve got two hours of work to get ready for an event, designate a block of time for prep. Whether it happens at that specific time or not, you’ll remember that those two hours are spoken for.
Build minor travel time into your appointment schedule. So far, instantaneous tele-transporting is not an option. It takes time to walk to the other end of the building or to drive across town. Book accordingly.
Choose flights to allow an extra cushion for delays and weather. Taking the second last flight out – rather than the last flight out gives you a little more wriggle room. Arriving early at the airport takes away some of the pressure of surprise line-ups at security.
Honor your down-time needs. If you are more introverted by nature, you’ll need more solo time and space between people engagements to replenish your energy. There’s nothing wrong with that. Just plan around it.
Pay attention as you move through your day and week. Note where you find yourself pinched by a lack of TAT. Adjust accordingly.

PAUSE -10.33- Goldilocks Was On To Something

REFLECTION: Remember Goldilocks? I’m pretty sure you do. But just in case it’s been a while, here’s a ten second refresher. While strolling through the woods one day, GL waltzed into the the empty Three Bears abode and made herself at home. Chair? Too big. Too small. Just right. Porridge? Too hot. Too cold. Just right. Bed? Too hard. Too soft. Just right. The TB’s eventually returned to surprise GL, who leaped from Baby Bear’s bed and ran from the house.
Now, while I don’t condone Break & Enter or advise helping yourself to other people’s stuff, I think Goldilocks was on to something in her search for ‘Just Right’.
What, exactly, can we learn from GL about the challenges of stress in life and work? Don’t blindly accept what you stumble across first? Keep testing and experimenting till you find something that fits?
In my work with clients, I hear a lot about the problems of overloading – too much work, too many demands, too little time. For others, underloading triggers its own set of problems – pointless busywork, feelings of uselessness, time weighing heavy. Rightloading – that ‘just right’ solution – is a tricky place to find. PAUSE -10.30- Take A Hike

REFLECTION: Earlier this year, I wrote about the value of ‘Getting Out There’ – making time to spend a few minutes or a few hours in nature. My last Pause message in September touched on the struggle between getting ‘things’ done and taking time for a walk. It’s not my intention to turn into a broken record on this subject. However, two events have inspired one more commentary on the impact of walking on well being.
First, a personal experience. We spent the last two weeks exploring New York City and cruising the coast of New England and the Maritimes. For all its cabs and subways, NYC is a walking city. And walk we did. If we’d had a pedometer, I’d give you a reading. But we didn’t, so I can’t.
What I can tell you is that it’s a long way from Uptown Central Park to the Financial District at the south end of Manhattan. Our soles covered most of that territory – some of it repeatedly. (I loved Central Park.) We stayed on the 6th floor of a Midtown Manhattan hotel, and other than using the elevator to haul luggage on arrival and departure, we took the five flights of stairs to and from our room – often several times a day.
As for the cruise, our cabin was mid-level in the ship. (more…)
PAUSE -10.29- Always Time For A Walk

REFLECTION:
As I write this, it’s mid morning Monday. At 6:30 a.m, I debated with myself whether I could actually spare the time to take my morning walk along the river. You’ve maybe had similar conversations with yourself from time to time!
The situation for me this week, is that Tuesday I’m headed to Vancouver for a business conference that will take up the rest of this week. I return to Saskatoon in time to attend a friend’s memorial service, empty my suitcase, and repack for a two week fall vacation get-away. A flurry of pre-travel tasks is queued up on the to-do list; and before I leave I need to take care of the final prep for a series of programs I’m booked to deliver on the heels of my return.
In the end, habit won the debate. I laced up my sneakers and headed for the trail. Here’s how things unfolded from there.
As I left the yard, a stunning red maple leaf caught my eye. I picked it up and took it along. My feet crunched as I made my way through the yellowed poplar leaves strewn across the path.
Mid-walk, I perched on my riverside rock for a moment’s meditation. The sun popped over the crest of the riverbank, flooding the valley with gold as far as the eye could see. Hundreds of geese veed up as they flew south along the river. A beaver nosed his way upstream, trailing twigs in his wake.
Apparently, relocation and dam repairs are underway as summer winds down and winter approaches. I don’t really need a calendar to know that the seasons are changing and time is moving on.
This churning and turning of the seasons was on my mind last weekend as I MC’ed the wedding reception for my niece and her new husband. Two decades ago, much shorter and younger, my niece trundled down the aisle as a flower girl at my youngest sister’s wedding. Saturday, she blazed her own trail to the future.
Yes, time is moving on; and I’m grateful every time I realize I’ve actually been present for another moment along the way. Apparently, in retrospect, I did have time for a walk along the river!
ACTION:
Life and time move quickly. A day, a week, a month, a year can all evaporate before our very eyes.
Reminder note to self: Don’t talk yourself out of making and taking time for what you know to be good for your heart and your health.
Questions to ponder: What habits help you tune in to the moment? What would increase the likelihood you’ll take time for those things that energize your heart, mind and body – despite the never-ending pressures of work at hand?

Carla T writes: I wanted to share a tip for travelers who are trying to find a healthy balance. When I am going to be at a conference or meetings for a few days, I try to book a hotel with a kitchenette. I do the grocery shopping on the first evening and make easy healthy meals instead of eating out at a restaurant every evening. Most restaurants serve portion sizes 2-3 times larger than what people need and it is harder to find healthier choices at many restaurants. (more…)

Vacations Essential

Thought you might be interested in the contents of my letter to the editor of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix that was published today in response to a recent article on vacation carry over and pay out. Here’s what I had to say:
In Friday, August 13th’s article on vacation pay for health care executives, Saskatoon Regional Health Authority chair, Jim Rhode, is quoted as saying: “It’s always great to see an employee that is concerned about their job more than they are about their vacation in terms of being there enough to get things done.”
While I agree with Mr. Rhode that commitment to your job and profession is laudable, his admiration for those who sacrifice personal vacation time for their work is misguided. Sadly, he is not alone in his point of view. This kind of self-imposed and peer-admired pressure to keep slogging at all costs creates significant problems for employees, leaders and the organizations they serve. Those costs go far beyond the fiscal liability of accrued holidays.
According to two studies on workload, the average person has a backlog of between 50 and 200 hours of work at any given time. The fact of the matter is, we will never be done again. Those who wait until the work is done to take a vacation will rarely give themselves permission to get away.
And, there are consequence for not getting away from the office. In an American study of 12,000 middle aged men at risk for coronary disease, those who take annual vacations are nearly 20% less likely to die during the ensuing nine years than those who skip holidays. A 20 year study of 749 women aged 45-64 found that for both employed women and homemakers, tension and a lack of vacations were two key predictors of heart attack.
The last thing we want is for our health care leadership to be damaging their own health and wellbeing in the interests of serving ours.
Taking time for renewal is not a reward for being done, it is an investment in being able to continue. It’s far wiser to encourage people at all levels of an organization to take their vacation and come back to the inevitable and ongoing workload refreshed and renewed for the challenges ahead.
